The repression of the 1898 insurrections in Italy and the consequent politicial and institutional crisis have been an extremely controversial issue in Italian historiography. This review essay examines how the 1898 events in general, and the rote played in that case by the Liberal ruling class in particular, have been considered throughout the Twentieth Century.
